NBA Insider: Jayson Tatum's Benching Was a Mistake by Steve Kerr

Everyone linked to basketball appears to have expressed their thoughts over Steve Kerr benching Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum in Team USA's men's basketball opening against Serbia on Sunday.

Retired NBA star Matt Barnes, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, and Celtics champion Kendrick Perkins questioned why Kerr wouldn't play Tatum in Team USA's blowout win. Colin Cowherd said that the Celtics forward is "way at the back" of the league's best players.

Frank Isola of ESPN brought up a really fascinating point when he explored why Tatum skipped Monday's NBA radio on SiriusXM.

NBA Insider: Jayson Tatum's Benching Was a Mistake by Steve Kerr

"Of the men on the Team USA current roster, Jayson Tatum got more MVP votes than any other guy for the (2023–24). Keep this in mind, Isola advised. "He's coming off a year, or he's just a few months away from winning an NBA championship when he was quite near to most likely being the MVP. Isola knows that not everyone will play every game when you have a team of superstars, but he doesn't know why Tatum would be the man riding the bench.

"I get this. I realized it would be ten males. "Steve Kerr has to make these difficult decisions, but it's gotta be Jayson Tatum? Although I know what Steve Kerr is doing, how can you get to the conclusion—that it should be Tatum—based only on the behavior of every team member throughout the past few months? He will be the unusual man out there. I'm not advocating Lebron (James) should be the odd man out or Kevin Durant, but how is Jayson Tatum the odd man out?

Based to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe, Tatum should have some playing time in Team USA's Wednesday game with South Sudan.
